Ghanaian media personality and master of ceremonies, MC Portfolio, has said that it will be unfair for any artiste to win the ultimate award at the 25th Telecel Ghana Music Awards over Stonebwoy.
Speaking to Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM's Showbiz A-Z, Portfolio said that the achievements of King Promise, who has received a lot of support in social media campaigns to win the Artiste of the Year award, pale in comparison with Stonebwoy's.
He suggested that Stonebwoy over-qualifies to be the Artiste of the Year in the awards.
“King Promise deserves to be in the conversation but not to be the winner. If we vouch for him for Artiste of the Year, then there should be a category this year called music institution of the Year for Stonebwoy,” he said.
According to him, most people vying for King Promise are using his recent performances which fall outside of the 2023 calendar year to advance their arguments.
“The likes of Baba Sadiq are playing on the ignorance of the many who are not technical people and so are using the advantage of recency to push an agenda when they know clearly that they don’t deserve it," he said.
He cited that Stonebwoy, works including his show at the Accra Sports Stadium, 5th Dimension album and tour sets him apart from all the other nominees.
The Ghana Music Awards' definition for the Artiste of the Year states that it is "the Artiste(s) adjudged by the Academy, Board and the General Public as the artiste with the highest audience appeal and popularity in the year under review. The artiste(s) must have released a hit single/EP/album and must be one of the artistes with the highest nominations in the year under review."
Stonebwoy has been nominated alongside Kuami Eugene, King Promise, Sarkodie, Nacee and Black Sherif.
Apart from the Artiste of the Year category, he has also earned nominations in the Most Popular Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Songwriter of the Year, International Collaboration of the Year and Highlife Song of the Year categories.
The rest are Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year, Best Music Video, Collaboration of the Year, Best Reggae/Dancehall song of the Year and Afropop Song of the Year.
The 25th Telecel Ghana Music Awards will be held at the Accra International Conference Centre on June 1, 2025.
Other categories to be awarded on the night include Songwriter of the Year, Record of the Year, Collaboration of the Year, Most Popular Song of the Year, New Artiste of the Year and Gospel Song of the Year.
