A Deputy General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, says the best match will surely be selected to partner the party's presidential candidate for election 2024, John Dramani Mahama.
Intense lobbying is underway from various quarters as various groups and individuals including some chiefs are working to push their preferred candidates for the position.
According to Mustapha Gbande, this was a good initiative because it shows that traditional rulers believe in the NDC’s ability to lead the people of Ghana on the path of economic recovery.
Speaking on JoyFM’s Top Story, he said “The number of people showing interest to be running mates, and to be president shows the next generational leaders of the party, and as a party, we are very happy with that.
“But the issue of selection rests with the leadership of the party in consultation with the council of elders and the flagbearer. One person will emerge taking into consideration the times we are in, the strategy of the party, regional balances, and a candidate that will best match the president to form the next government. That is very key today.”
He explained that the party was looking to select a candidate who would contribute to regional balance and bring on board experience.
Mr Gbande stated that this was a crucial season for the party.
“It is very obvious that chiefs are very interested in the next government and they see that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is going to lead the country.”
The Deputy General Secretary claimed the former President was under pressure to make a decision; however, he clarified that this pressure was positive.
