Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Elections Committee, Joseph Osei Owusu, has clarified that former Assin Central MP, Kennedy Agyapong’s reservations during the signing of the party’s peace pact were not due to any errors or omissions in the document, but rather his desire for firm assurances of a free and fair electoral process.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Owusu explained that all presidential aspirants were given copies of the peace pact days ahead of the signing to review and raise any concerns.
He noted that Kennedy Agyapong specifically drew attention to Clause Two of the agreement, which requires aspirants to accept the outcome of the election once results are declared.
According to him, Mr Agyapong cited a previous experience in which he claimed a constituency voted but returned zero votes for him, raising concerns about possible rigging.
However, Mr Owusu said the Elections Committee, in consultation with the Electoral Commission, assured the aspirant that any proven irregularities or acts of rigging would lead to the cancellation of the election.
He stressed that the concerns were adequately addressed and that the process met expectations, with all five aspirants eventually signing the pact.
“Ken wanted assurance that there would be no rigging in the election due to previous incidents. They received copies of the agreement days in advance, allowing them to raise any concerns before the signing day. Overall, our expectations were met, and they signed one document with five signatures,” he added.
