This weekend, Newsfile takes on some of the most pressing issues shaping Ghana’s democracy, governance, and political future.
The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), University of Ghana branch, has sounded what it describes as an urgent national alarm on the growing threat of galamsey.
The lecturers warn that illegal mining has reached a crisis point, devastating farmlands, poisoning water bodies, and threatening public health. UTAG is demanding emergency state measures, including prosecutions and stronger enforcement, to halt what it calls an existential danger to the country.
Meanwhile, a major constitutional battle is unfolding. Former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a lawsuit challenging President Mahama’s warrant of removal from office.
At the heart of her case is whether the process for removing a Chief Justice can be the same as that used to remove an ordinary Supreme Court justice. Legal experts say the outcome could redefine the boundaries of executive power over the judiciary, making this a landmark case in Ghana’s constitutional history.
Adding to the debate on governance, new polling data from IMANI Africa’s PULSE tracker reveals that public sentiment has shifted markedly since the start of the year. At inauguration, optimism levels hovered between 65–70 percent.
But nine months into the new administration, controversies such as mass dismissals in the public sector, accusations of selective prosecutions, and asset scandals have eroded some of that goodwill. IMANI is urging government to embrace greater transparency, fairness in anti-corruption efforts, and clearer communication to regain the public’s trust.
On the political front, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia has embarked on a multi-stop “thank-you” tour of party strongholds. Officially, the tour is a show of appreciation to grassroots supporters after the 2024 elections.
But political analysts suggest the trip is also strategic aimed at consolidating his influence within the party, reinforcing loyalty, and shaping internal narratives ahead of future contests.
As always, Newsfile brings together the nation’s leading voices to unpack these complex issues, separate fact from spin, and provide clarity on matters that impact both governance and the lives of ordinary Ghanaians.
