Three Regional Chairmen of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) have demanded the Electoral Commission (EC) release data on the number of people who used the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) cards to register in the electoral roll.
The Chairmen who come from Upper East, Brong Ahafo and the Ashanti Regions said they need the data to call for the removal of NHIS carders during the exhibition of the voters’ register exercise.
Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Nana Obiri Boahen who happens to be the lawyer for the Regional Chairmen said the demand of his clients is within the reach of the EC.
According to him, “We want the Electoral Commission to furnish us with the total number of voters who used NHIS cards to register in all the constituencies in the three regions.”
“Then, in addition, we want the EC to provide us with the total number of Ghanaians who registered outside Ghana yet their names appeared in the register in the three regions,” he added.
He admonished the EC to “furnish them with the document as early as possible.”
On his part, private legal practitioner, Abraham Amaliba said as far as the EC remains a state institution, anyone could write to it to seek any information.
“It is not as if the EC is a private institution and for that you cannot demand certain information from it,” he said adding the EC is there to serve every Ghanaian.
“So if any citizen requires any information and it is within the ability of the EC to provide that information, the EC will have to oblige but if it is beyond them, the EC will have to reply,” he said.
