The Ministry of Transport has deployed Marine Patrol Units to monitor the Volta Lake as part of measures to address accidents.

According to the sector Minister, Fiifi Kwetey, the Unit which is under the direction of the Ghana Maritime Authority will operate in the fashion the Police Patrol Units operate on Ghanaian roads.

The transport minister disclosed this on the floor of Parliament as the nation puts in place some measures to remove tree stumps from the lake to ensure better navigation by boat owners.

In a space of a month, a total of at least 21 Ghanaians have lost their lives on the Volta lake as a result of overloading.

The repeated nature of the accident has caused many Ghanaians to question the determination of the government to resolving the issue.

But speaking to Joy News, Mr Kwetey said the government will be prioritizing the clearing of the trees in the waterways to end the accident.

He also said the ministry in collaboration with the Ghana Maritime Authority will ensure that there is a clear demarcation for boat users on the lake.

Expressing some confidence, the minister said “there is going to be some commitment to ensuring that we have some of this patrol operate along our water bodies.”
