The Kumasi Police on Saturday arrested four people suspected to be among football fans who went on a rampage after Kumasi Asante Kotoko drew 2-2 with Etoil Sportive du Sahel of Tunisia in their CAF Confederation Cup match played at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.
Also arrested was a Tunisian Official believed to a member of the Technical team of Etoile who is alleged to have assaulted one of the policemen on duty at the stadium.
The fans who besieged the main entrance to the stadium barricaded the road amidst throwing of stones soon after the match, complaining that the match officials had not been fair to Kotoko which they said resulted in the drawn score line.
In the heat of the protest, the fans smashed the wind screens of many vehicles including the Rapid Deployment Force Unit Van of the Ghana Police Service, a Toyota Hilux Pick-Up of the Ghana News Agency (GNA) whilst some other vehicles also had their driving mirrors destroyed.
When the GNA Sports visited the Kumasi Central Police Station after the mayhem, the Tunisian official as well as the four suspects had been detained pending Police investigations into their involvement in the incident.
“We will process the suspects for court soon after the investigations”, a Police Officer told the GNA Sports.
The Police in an effort to stem further damages beefed up security at the Golden Tulip Kumasi City Hotel and Cicero Guest House where players of Etoile and the match officials were accommodated.
