US carrier United Airlines has confirmed to Joy Business, the suspension of its operations on the Accra-Washington route from July 04.
In response to a Joy Business mail to the company’s office in London, United Airlines said they have had to cease operations on the route because of poor financial performance and high fuel cost.
It however says persons who have already purchased tickets to fly during that period will be given refunds or put on other airlines. Industry watchers are however surprised by United’s move since the route is one of the most lucrative.
United began operations to Accra in June last year.
The company recently merged with continental airlines to create the world’s biggest airline. United Airlines' suspension might have serious implications for country. It was one of the airlines that contributed heavily to infrastructure upgrade at the Kotoka International Airport.
Meanwhile, Joy Business has learnt that Brussels Airlines has also suspended its operations to Accra just a little over one year after operations. It is however not clear what influenced their decision.
