Former Rector of the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), Professor Stephen Addei has faulted Employment Minister, Moses Asaga for blaming the country’s soaring graduate unemployment on private universities. Prof. Addei maintained that university education is to prepare the minds of students on how to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in school in the job market but not to train them for jobs. Employment and Social Welfare Minister, Moses Asaga in an apparent response to the Trade Union Congress’ (TUC) concerns about unemployment rate in the country; blamed the situation on the proliferation of private universities he says produce graduates with sub-standard qualifications. He indicated that the private universities in the country have failed to adequately equip its students with requisite skills and knowledge for the job market hence the growing number of joblessness among graduates. But Prof. Addei who is a lecturer at Pentecost University College in Accra said the Minister’s comments are ill-informed and misplaced. He noted that the private universities are affiliated to public universities which equally produce mediocre graduates therefore they [private universities] cannot bear all the blame. Prof Addei could not fathom why government will boost of unprecedented economic growth and the creation of 1.7 million jobs in three years and yet there is no employment statistics to corroborate its claims. The private lecturer urged Moses Asaga to quit the blame game and be proactive to address the jobless growth in the country. Prof Adei also called for government regulations to ensure that standards are maintained in the face of the growing number of private universities in the country.
