The battle for corporate football supremacy is set to unfold at the University of Ghana as 16 institutions prepare to face off in the inaugural University of Ghana Corporate Football League.
The competition, which runs from February to July 2025, builds on last year's UG Corporate Football Gala, which was won by The Union Ghana.
Following a stakeholders' meeting at the University of Ghana Sports and Wellness Directorate, teams made their ambitions clear, setting the stage for what promises to be a fiercely contested season.
The atmosphere was charged with determination, as players and team officials spoke with confidence about their chances.
Emmanuel Avi from Lancaster University was bullish about his side’s potential.
"We will put in the work to be on top. Our only threat is the Ghana Armed Forces Officers Sports Club, but I know we can beat Telecel."
His sentiments were echoed by Nana Yaw Odame of Union Ghana, the reigning champions, who left no room for doubt.
"We’re winning! What you need to know is that we’re willing the cup to ourselves for the next five years. If anybody wants to win the league, they shouldn't compete - they should come and negotiate for it."
For others, last year’s gala left lessons to be learned. Kennedy Ateamene of UG College of Education acknowledged past struggles but remained hopeful.
"The zeal is there, and the boys are training hard. Union troubled us so much during the gala, but we will overtake them." Daniel Bayakpa of Central Administration was equally confident, declaring, "We will match everyone boot for boot. Union is somehow a threat, but we’re preparing for them."
Among the 16 teams, Forestry Commission and the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) also staked their claims. Eric Ansah of Forestry Commission pointed to a new weapon in their arsenal: "Our new CEO is going to play, so expect more from us. I don’t see anyone as a threat, but NPA will come after us, and we’re ready." Meanwhile, Rocher M.K. Davon of NPA emphasized their year-round preparation. "At NPA, we don’t take things lightly. We’re going to have fun, but we’re always prepared. We train all year."
The competition is set to be more than just a football tournament. Organizers say it will promote health, community spirit, and camaraderie among corporate entities. Kodwo Brumpon of UG Alumni added a personal touch to the rivalry, vowing, "We’ve got the team, and we’re coming for the cup. We just want to beat Union home and away, but we’re winning the league."
As the countdown begins, teams are fine-tuning their strategies, intensifying training sessions, and rallying their supporters.
From experienced veterans to ambitious newcomers, every squad has something to prove. With the stakes high and the energy unmatched, the University of Ghana Corporate Football League is poised to deliver a thrilling season filled with drama, passion, and unforgettable moments
