The University of Ghana has reassured parents that it is actively working to enhance student accommodation within the school.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo there is ongoing collaboration with private partners to expand student accommodation.
Speaking at the school's graduation ceremony on January 24, 2024, she explained that several private hostels were at different stages of completion.
“The University continues to work towards increasing the stock of accommodation available for our students. There is continued engagement with private partners to expand student accommodation, and several private hostels are at various stages of completion,” she said.
Professor Appiah Amfo said the school is currently constructing the Diamond Jubilee Hostel and University Staff Superannuation Scheme (GUSSS) student hostel as well as the PhD apartments.
“Diamond Jubilee hostel which is being constructed and furnished using internally generated funds is nearing completion, and work is also ongoing on the Ghana University Staff Superannuation Scheme (GUSSS) student hostel and on the PhD apartments.
“All of these initiatives, in addition to private hostels being constructed, when completed, will add significantly to the stock of beds available,” she added.
She assured students and parents that the university will continue to prioritise allocating traditional halls to fresh undergraduate students through the Open Randomized Bed Allocation System.
The system is to ensure a fair and transparent process in bed allocation, offering all students an equal opportunity of being allocated a room irrespective of their internet connectivity status.
The improvement in housing conditions is in response to a surge in student enrollment at the university.
The university has currently enrolled a total of 63,820 students.
