Authorities in the Greater Accra Region have established processes to clamp down on indiscipline on roads of the country’s capital, particularly, motorbikes and tricycles.
Under the new rules, all owners of unregistered or uninsured motorcycles and tricycles shall have up to Tuesday, August 31 to regularise their documentation or face arrests and prosecution.
In a statement issued, the Regional Coordinating Council highlighted that the new traffic laws form part of the 'Let’s Make Accra Work' agenda.
The Greater Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) noted that it is working in collaboration with the Motor Traffic and Transportation Department (MTTD) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA).
Outlining the new directives, REGSEC stated that;
1. All Owners of unregistered or uninsured Motorcycles and Tricycles shall have up to August 315, 2021 to regularize their documentation. Non-complying motorcycles shall be impounded and Riders/Owners arrested and prosecuted effective 15t September 2021. Where the Motorcycles and Tricycles remain unregistered, owners or riders must possess valid customs/shipping documentations.
2. All Motorcycle and Tricycle Riders who have no license shall be arrested, prosecuted and be made to acquire valid Rider's license.
3. All Motorcycle and Tricycle Riders shall observe all road traffic regulations. Riders who cross the red light as well as violate other traffic regulations shall be arrested and prosecuted by a special Task Force.
4. All Motorcycle, Pillion Riders and Tricycle Riders shall wear the appropriate gears i.e. reflective jackets, helmets, knee and elbow protectors and boots where applicable.
