Government has been criticized for exercising poor judgment after it agreed to take in two former terror suspects detained in the US since 2002.
International relations expert Vladmir Antwi-Danso says government’s explanation that it took the Yemenis because there is instability in Yemen does not add up.
This is because Yemen’s neighbour Saudi Arabia is peaceful and more importantly, is a big ally of the U.S, the Senior Fellow of the Center for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD) of the University of Ghana explained.
According to him Saudi Arabia, 993 km from Yemin is a better option than Ghana which is about 8,729km away from the war-ravaged nation.
He said Ghanaians were not prepared for the ‘shock’ of knowing who the two terror suspects Khalid Mohammed Salih al-Dhuby, 38, and Mahmmoud Omar Mohmmed Bin Atef, 36, are and will be left to roam free after two years.
“Free to what? Do we know what they can do?” the scandalized expert questioned.
He said money laundering, gun running and drugs are some nefarious activities open to these detainees once they are free.
Evaluating Ghana’s options, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso said the decision is cast in stone.
“It can’t be reversed; we have got to live with it”
He said he was not surprised by the developments because he had earlier raised concerns in an article he posted in which he noted America is looking to “dump” ex-Guantanamo Bay detainees.
President Barack Obama is keen to fulfill a 2008 campaign promise to close the military prison which now has less than 100 prisoners after almost 200 people were illegally detained in the bay for several years.
