Assistant Commissioner of Police, Seth Charles Oteng, Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Commander, has urged leaders of political parties in the region to hold their rallies during the day to avoid violence and to enable the police to identify and arrest culprits in a case of violence.
He said that when the rallies are held in the night, it makes it difficult for the police to control any sort of political violence between parties, which sometimes get out of hand.
The Regional Police Commander was addressing leaders of some political parties in the region at a meeting in Sunyani on Friday, to find ways of curbing violence and to ensure peace and tranquility in the region before, during and after the December polls.
The participating parties were the DPP, NDC, DFP and the NPP.
Mr Oteng said when the country encountered situations like what happened in Gushiegu in the Northern Region, “it becomes a burden on the police and changes our scheduled activities”.
He attributed the cause of such troubles to non-planning of events by the political parties, which sometimes end up in clashes.
The Regional Commander called on the parties to plan their rallies and other activities and also inform the police ahead of such events to enable them to ensure incident-free gatherings.
Mr Oteng said the country had conducted elections peacefully since 1992, and advised the parties’ to hold their campaigns devoid of insults to ensure a peaceful election.
In a resolution, the political parties appealed to the police service for equal attention and protection during their rallies.
