Workers of the Vodafone Ghana IT Department have renovated and refurbished the A.M.E Zion Kindergarten School in Pokuase for the children in the community. A statement from Vodafone said the renovation included replacement of wooden windows with louver blades, replacement of damaged roofing sheets, wall plastering, new staircase, and ceiling for two classrooms blocks, among other things. “We also provided 60 chairs and 40 tables for the pupils, 100 pieces of Friday wear and sporting kits, 300 pieces of exercise books, 100 packs of crayons, 150 pieces of string drawn bags, 60 footballs, 100 pieces of pencils, 100 packs of rice and drinks, and other items for the pupils,” it said. The Vodafone employees also provided the school with six computers, 20 computer chairs and signage to the school and have started the construction of a computer lab. The statement said the gesture was a demonstration of employee volunteerism, which is part of the Vodafone Ghana Foundation’s initiative that allowed Vodafone employees to devote paid time to community projects of their choice. The Pokuase A.M.E Zion Kindergarten school renovation project which started about a year ago is the second educational project to be undertaken by Vodafone staff. Speaking at a ceremony to officially hand over the school, the Chief Information Officer of Vodafone Ghana, Eric Valentine noted that Vodafone believed each employee had a unique contribution to make in the lives the people in their communities. He said Vodafone Ghana was passionate about education and wanted to see each pupil and student in Ghana have access to all the resources that would enable them become their best; and would not relent in our efforts to encouraging its employees touch the very hearts of the people in the different communities and leave lasting legacies in their hearts. The Headmistress of the Pokuase A.M.E Zion Kindergarten, Mrs. Sincere Zormelo Dossou expressed her gratitude to Vodafone employees for their immense support to the school. According to her, the school can now ‘boast of a standardised kindergarten block’.
