The Ghana Police Service says it will not apologize for its treatment of some demonstrating teachers last Friday. The teachers accuse police officers deployed to stop the demonstration of whipping them with truncheons and firing tear gas at them. The National Association of Graduate Teachers is demanding investigations into the incident and the punishment of the officers involved. A section of the public has since come out to back NAGRAT’s position and Members of Parliament yesterday also joined the condemnation asking the Inspector General to discipline his men. MP for Manhyia, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh said “When people are fighting for what is right – unarmed – police should not [un]necessarily dent the image government by shooting [at them]”. Another MP called on the government to strongly condemn the conduct of the police. But Director of Police Public Affairs Superintendent Kwesi Ofori says the criticisms and demands for investigations are baseless. He accused the teachers of exhibiting double standards and showing bad example for the pupils they teach. The Police PRO said for teachers to be throwing stones “at their own police, what legacy are they leaving for the children?” He maintained whatever action the police took was in consonance with the law. Meanwhile sixteen police officers in Accra have been interdicted for poor management of police cells. Superintendent Kwesi Ofori told Joy News the exercise is part of the image cleansing campaign being waged by the IGP, Paul Tawiah Quaye. He said a taskforce visiting police cells observed foreign materials such as mobile phones and sharp implements had been allowed in the cells contrary to service regulations. Consequently, two senior officers, three inspectors and 12 junior rank officers have been interdicted. Source: Joy News/Ghana
