The Minority in Parliament has reiterated its stance to defend one of its own in times of distress.
Speaking on Top Story on Joy FM, Deputy Minority Leader, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, said this become necessary since government has decided to abuse its powers.
“We will stand by our members anytime there are unjustly being harassed by government…the point must be made that we would stand by our members anytime this government unjustly tries to bully them into court,” he pointed out.
He added that the Minority does not intend to disclose the strategy they intend to deploy in his stance.
The Ellembelle MP claimed that the harassment of the Minority in Parliament – Collins Dauda, Dr Ato Forson and Gyakye Quayson is intended to weaken them in order to prevent them from being a check on the government.
According to him, the NDC MPs will not kowtow but they would stand up to the government, adding that “if it means going to with our members on a daily basis to Parliament, we would.”
“…It is coming very clear to us that this government is becoming very unreasonable and they think that the power the people of Ghana has given them can simply be abused and be used to basically bully people who have been elected to represent them and we are saying that it will not happen,” he noted.
This comment follows the Minority Leader, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson stating in Parliament that all the NDC MPs will accompany the embattled Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson in court to show their support.
“I wish to serve notice that the entire minority group will accompany our colleague to court today and any other day that he is to appear in court.”
“We are solidarising with our colleague, I urge the government to listen to the good people of Assin North and do the right thing,” he said.
Explaining the need for such an action, Mr Armah-Kofi Buah said, “We want to make sure we state our position that, if this government continues the way it has been doing in attempting to basically coerce and use the power of the Attorney-General to basically threaten us [Minority] into somehow being afraid to do our work and represent our people, we will stand up to them.
“For example, we will not let the Attorney General simply go to court and just make the case that he wants members of parliament to report on a daily basis when we have a responsibility to represent our people,” he stressed.
