A demonstration by workers to register their displeasure with the recent increases in utility tariffs and prices of petroleum products has taken off in all ten regional capitals.
In the Brong Ahafo regional capital, Sunyani, Joy News correspondent, Precious Semevor, reports that hundreds of workers have poured onto the streets to demand a response from government.
The nationwide demonstration is to compel government to reverse the tariff and petroleum price increases after talks with the Employment and Labour Ministry ended in a deadlock.
They are also unhappy about the new taxes they say have brought undue pressure on them and their families.
The demonstration will be followed by a nationwide strike on January 21 and 22, 2016.
Upper West Regional correspondent, Rafiq Salam also reports that the demonstration has started in Wa.
Here in Accra, Joy News' Ekow Sam says hundreds of protestors have set off from the Obra Spot and are currently at the Ako Adjei Interchange.
In the Volta region, Mawuli Yevu Agbi said many public sector workers, as well as market women, have joined in the demonstration.
Northern Regional correspondent, Martina Bugri said demonstrators in Tamale were heading to the regional Coordinating Council to present their petition to the regional minister.
Police in the Eastern Region are not only guarding the protestors but, have themselves joined in the demonstration, Joy News’ Kofi Siaw reports.
Eastern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Awuni has asked the police band to join the demonstrators and provide music to create a cordial atmosphere during the demonstration.
Joy News’ Kweku Owusu Peprah is in the Western Region and reports that about 200 members of organized labour are presenting their petition to the regional minister at the western Regional Coordinating Council.
