The police have raided and closed down the recently opened office of an LGBTQ group at Ashongman in Accra.

A representative of the owner of the property, Dr Asenso Gyambi told Joy News he was unhappy with the answers given to him by the tenant who rented the house.

He said at about 7 pm on Tuesday, he received a text message from an undisclosed source that the house is being used for LGBTQ activities.

"When I asked for evidence he sent me pictures of an event that was held in this house so I called the agent and I asked him who rented the house because they have been here for just two months.

"I asked him if he was aware an event of this nature took place here? He said 'Oh Doc, nothing really it was just a party and fundraiser event we were having and it is all over social media.'"

Dr Gyambi said this infuriated him to seek more clarity upon which he told him the truth.

Chief Imam, others charge government to close down office

The National Chief Imam, Sheik Usman Nuhu Sharubutu, as well as the Christian Council and other well-meaning Ghanaians have called on the government to establish its position on the activities of LGBTQ+ in the country.

They also called for the closure of the office as such activities are alien to the Ghanaian culture and religion frowns on it.

This comes in the wake of public discourse over the opening of an Accra office by the LGBTQ+ community in Ghana.

The January 31 event which saw in attendance representatives from the Australian and Danish Embassies and other EU delegation, has been heavily criticised by a cross-section of Ghanaians.

Anti-gay rights advocate, National Coalition for Proper Human Sexual Rights and Family Values said allowing such activity is a contradiction of the country’s laws regarding unnatural carnal knowledge as its basis.

Religious factions such as the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council (GPCC), have further advanced arguments for the government to summon foreign diplomats supporting advocacy for LGBTQI rights in Ghana.

Meanwhile, the group has blamed the police for not helping them even when the traditional leaders in Ashongman have threatened to burn down their office.
