The Ministry of Communications in collaboration with the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication will build 20 telecommunication masts to enable telecoms operators extend their services to remote parts of the country.
The project, according to sector Minister, Haruna Iddrisu, will assist in the fight against highway robbery.
Haruna Iddrisu who was speaking at the inauguration of ICT laboratories at Biriwa in the Central Region, said there has been a noted incidence of crime arising out of the lack of connectivity to mobile telephony in such areas.
“If you watch most areas in Ghana where armed robberies have been devastating, they are usually areas where people cannot make phone contact and they may be unattractive areas for the existing network operators. We will throw our intervention, make sure that we construct 20 of such masts and compel the operators to co-locate (to mitigate crime).
