The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee for the 2023 African Games, Dr. Kwaku Ofosu-Asare, believes Ghana could have raked in more medals if more investment was made into the preparation of athletes.
Ghana won an unprecedented 69 medals – the highest in the competition’s history and finished sixth on the medal table.
But many think Ghana could have done better if the athletes were given a better preparation.
Some of the athletes had complained about inadequate support to prepare for the games as the cause of their underperformance.
Now, the chairman of the LOC, Dr Ofosu Asare, has corroborated these assertions.
“This is where I have a concern. We are hosting the games, and you (federations) are in charge of these athletes. You (federations) know that this guy must be prepared; get him ready," he told Citi TV.
“As a host, we should have put in more investment to prepare our athletes.
“We shouldn’t get carried away with this achievement, marvelous achievement, but we need to invest to move to the next level.
“We could have won more medals if we had prepared as expected. You cannot reap anything if you don’t sow.”
