Some 24 health workers in the Northern Region have contracted the coronavirus, Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr John Eleeza has disclosed.

Seventeen of them work at the Tamale Teaching Hospital alone. That facility is at the forefront of government’s fight against the coronavirus in the region.

Currently, eight are on admission whiles the rest are at home.

Dr John Eleeza disclosed this on the sidelines of a meeting with the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) and Heads of Departments to dialogue on the outbreak of the disease in the region.

The meeting was also to help plan on how to still develop the region even during a Covid-19 era.

Dr Eleeza said the region as of June 24, 2020 had recorded 94 accumulative cases of Covid-19 with six deaths and 63 recoveries.

He said the region’s active case stands at 24 with nine at the region’s treatment centre.

At a press briefing on Wednesday, Dr Eleeza raised concerned about poor adherence to health protocols in communities but responding to the issues, the Northern Regional Minister said it was one of the reasons for the meeting to get the stakeholders to turn to their communities and enforce the guidelines.

Mr. Saeed said the meeting will help assess government implementing programmes in the region, their successes and lapses and the way forward.

He said it was also to plan how they can partner with the private sector in that regard. 

Speaking on Covid-19, the Minister said they are assessing the current situation of the pandemic in the region and to map up measures that would aid in its containment.

He expressed his satisfaction with works done by the various departments on issues relating to the Covid-19. He however, admonished the MMDCEs to increase their pace of work so that the region can meet its target.

Mr Saeed appealed to the various stakeholders to conduct themselves in an atmosphere that would not mar the electoral process by the Electoral Commission in their respective jurisdictions.

This he said when adhered to, would ensure a violence free election before, during and after the December polls.

He also appealed to the people of the region who were able to register during the National Identification Authority’s exercise to take advantage of the mop up and register so that they can register when the EC begins its exercise.
