The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 60-year-old man for allegedly assaulting his 16-year-old son at North Legon in a shocking incident that has sparked public outrage.
Briefing the media, Superintendent of Police and the Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, Ms. Juliana Obeng, said the suspect was picked up by the Madina Divisional Police Command following swift intervention after reports of the disturbing abuse.
She explained that preliminary investigations indicate the incident occurred on May 3, 2026, when the teenager went out to play football with friends despite repeated warnings from his father.
According to police, the father, identified as Eric Mante, confronted the boy upon his return and allegedly acted in anger over his conduct.
In the process, he is said to have tied the victim to a quad motorbike and sped off, dragging him along the road near the Adonai Church area. The victim reportedly fell and was dragged for several minutes, sustaining multiple injuries.
Ms. Obeng noted that the cries of the victim attracted residents in the area, who quickly intervened and stopped the suspect from continuing the act before reporting the incident to police.
The injured boy was rushed to hospital for treatment, while the suspect was arrested shortly after.
She added that during investigations, the suspect admitted to the act, stating he acted out of anger after repeatedly warning his son not to engage in such activities.
The police have strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a serious case of child abuse, and are urging parents and guardians to use lawful and non-violent methods in correcting children.
Juliana Obeng further encouraged the public to report all cases of abuse promptly to law enforcement authorities to ensure swift action.
