Six hundred and twenty two new HIV AIDS cases have been recorded in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta region in the year 2013.
This brings the total cumulative number of people living with HIV AIDs who are on treatment to 1,073 the highest in the Volta region.
This was revealed by the Municipal health Director of Health, Dr. Joseph Degle at the annual performance review in the municipal assembly hall at Aflao.
According to Doctor Degle, the high rate of the disease can be attributed to the commercial sex work which is booming at the border town Aflao.
He said the 622 cases detected were mostly drivers, traders along the Aflao border who may have had unprotected sex with the commercial sex workers.
Dr Degle said the health directorate is intensifying HIV education to reverse the trend.
"It is not a good indicator but what we need to do is to intensify education on HIV so we can reverse this trend," he said.
