CEO of Kufour Foundation, Prof. Baffour Agyeman-Duah, has bemoaned what he says is a lack of patriotism on the part of politicians.
Speaking on the Super Morning Show, Tuesday, he said almost all politicians go into politics to pursue selfish gains.
“Previously, those who went into politics went with the mindset of going to serve the nation, but as I speak to you today, 99% of Ghanaians who go into politics, do so for their personal interests.”
His comment was part of discussions on patriotism during the show. The professor indicated that “a shift from morality to what I call the monetization of everything,” has largely contributed to this kind of attitude by the politicians.
“When it comes to politics, which is crucial in building emotions and sentiments for the country, we get disappointed.
“Political parties come into government and they treat the nation and its resources as their property,” he said.
He recounted an encounter with some MPs when he started working with IEA.
“In the late early 2000s, I had started my civil society work with IEA and we started this Parliamentary workshops and capacity building and then, we were taking parliamentarians to Akosombo, Elmina.
"What was surprising to me was the fact that when we asked them to come for the workshop to build their own capacity, they insisted that we pay them besides their transportation before they attend the programme that will benefit them and this thing has grown up to today. So you ask yourself, are they really there to truly serve their country?” he asked.
"We have seen a progressive development for our attachment for profit in anything that we do and I think unfortunately in so doing, we have put the country aside and it's a very dangerous thing," he added.
