The Birim North District director of Education, George Diko has expressed worry that despite the introduction of the Capitation Grant and School Feeding Programme, some children still refuse to go to school because of the unattractive nature of some school buildings in the district.
He said this at the inauguration of renovated three unit classroom blocks for New Abirem Local Authority School in the Eastern Region by Newmont, a mining company based in the Akyem area.
Mr. Diko said most buildings in the district have become death traps that teachers and children risk their lives staying in them to teach and learn.
He said some religious bodies are only interested in putting their names on schools without carrying out any maintenance on them.
The District Director said children must be supported in their educational endeavours to enable them become responsible citizens in the country since education is the key to change and success in life.
Mr. Diko expressed gratitude to Newmont for the numerous ways it has supported in providing school facilities in the district. The General Manager of Newmont Akyem project in charge of Environmental and Social Responsibility, Robin Budden said the renovation project is the third since 2005.
He said Newmont is committed to work, as partners and collaborators with communities to bring about socio-economic advancement.
The DCE for Birim North, Nana Acquah Frempong said for every meaningful project, there must be love and unity among the people.
He commended the communities and Newmont in executing the projects.
