There is simmering tension between some residents in Ada in the Greater Accra Region and those in South Tongu in the Volta Region over who has the right to mine oysters in the Volta River.
The oyster economy has for years been a major source of livelihood for the two communities but has become a harbinger of conflicts in the last few days.
Two people from South Tongu were reportedly beaten up when they attempted to mine the marine by people suspected to be in Ada.
The victims and people associated with them are preparing for revenge. They told the Times newspaper they will come fully prepared to defend themselves.
The Ashaiman Police have called for dialogue among the feuding factions.
Divisional Police Commander Chief Superintendent David Eklu told Citi News: "There is some level of agitation as to who should mine oyster where and some also go there to nurse the oyster and I understand some also go there to mine the oyster."
"It came to our attention and we have identified the opinion leaders in the Ada side and have spoken to our counterparts in Sogakope division.
"We are advising them to use dialogue."
Superintendent Eklu said they are also planning a meeting between opinion leaders of the two communities to find an amicable solution to the conflict.
