Ghanaian theatre seems to have gone through a facelift in the last few years. The scripts have gained more depth and theatre acting has leapfrogged to an appreciable level. At least these were the views expressed by the audience at the national theatre after watching two classical pieces performed by the Eastern Drama Group from Koforidua and students from the School of Performing Arts, University of Ghana Legon. The first 30 minute piece ‘Streetism’ (written and directed by Okyere Asante) played out the harsh realities of what it takes to survive on the streets. The second drama piece, ‘Everyman’, is a morality play adapted and directed by Martin Owusu. It presented a generalized x-ray of the general human experience. During the thirty minute show the auditorium went quiet as the audience got drawn into what seemed like a surreal experience. The performance was well thought out and gripping enough to have the audience continuously spellbound. At least the students from the School of Performing Arts proved their worth and got some great reviews from the audience. The entire piece was well performed with fantastic sound tracks and visuals supporting parts of the act. Perhaps this may be the beginning of an evolution in Ghana’s theatre Performance but more will be expected from the Students next around. JIVE
