Three private hostels at Ayeduase New site, on the outskirts of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), face legal action for discharging faeces into open drains.

Ceasar’s Palace, SAAB and Afranie Hostels are the culprits who pose health risks to enraged but helpless residents who now find solace in the sanitation campaign by Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Luv and Nhyira FM.

The campaign comes in the wake of the ongoing war against bad sanitation practices in the city which is a partnership between the Kumasi office of the Multimedia Group Limited and the KMA.

The enforcement team at the scene, sealed some of the pipes with concrete while others were destroyed and served notices of legal actions to the landlords of the hostels.

One of the leaders of the sanitation enforcement team, Simon Adangeba said, “you are not supposed to discharge faecal matter into a drain. If we do not take precaution immediately it is going to create a problem”.

Residents of the neighbourhood grumbled they could no longer bear the nuisance after persistent complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

A resident of the area said, “anytime they discharge their toilet into this so-called pipe system, I can’t sleep in my room. I have to move into the hall because you can’t stand the smell”.

“This dirty water is what those cultivating vegetables around use to water the vegetables, so they should remove all this from the area, we are tired of them,” another revealed.

Two stations under the Multimedia Group Limited, Luv 99.5 FM and Nyira104.5 FM, have teamed up with the sanitation enforcement team inaugurated by the Chief Executive, Osei Assibey Antwi, to enforce the Assembly's bylaws on sanitation.
