The Mfantseman District Directorate of Education is to produce Fante reading books for basic schools to improve education in the area.
Consequently, the Directorate has invited specialist teachers in Fate language for orientation so that they could start the project.
Miss Vivian Etroo, District Director of Education, announced this at an annual meeting to review the performance of schools in the district, at Saltpond.
The Ghana Education Service in partnership with the Education Management Improvement Component of Quality Education, Learning for All (EQUALL), a unit of United States Agency for International Development, organized the meeting.
Miss Etroo said the inability of pupils and students to read and understand lessons and examination questions, resulted in their poor performance in examinations.
She expressed worry that schools in the district lacked Fante reading materials adding that if the project proved successful, it would cover the publication of English Language books.
Mr Johnson Boakye Yiadom, Development Planning Co-ordinator of EQUALL, called on government to reactivate defunct resource centres for schools in the country and urged teachers to encourage creative writing in educational institutions.
Mr Robert Quainoo-Arthur, District Chief Executive, appealed to parents to invest in the education of their children since that was the best legacy they could bequeathed to them.
Nana Ataapim Kweenu VIII, Mankrado of the Nkusukum Traditional Area, and Presiding Member of the District Assembly, called on traditional rulers to assist in the enforcement of bye-laws enacted to promote education in the area.
Mfantseman is one of the 20 beneficiary districts in the country implementing the EQUALL programme on quality education.
