The Newmont Akyem Development Foundation is constructing a vocational and technical institute in its resettlement community to provide competence-based vocational and technical skills for the youth in the mining communities.
The Akyem Vocational and Technical Institute would metamorphose into a Technical University in the long term.
According to Executive Secretary of the Newmont Akyem Development Foundation, Paul Apenu, construction of the Technical institute is phased in three categories based on the development years up to a year and a half, five years and the tenth year.
At a ceremony to break grounds for the construction of the first phase of the project, Paul Apenu, hinted the Akyem Vocational Institute after the tenth year plan, would have developed and built six departments with some 18-20 trade areas.
The six department includes fashion, cosmetology, building, electrical and construction, agriculture/agribusiness, home management and proposed mining and allied sciences.
The vocational institute being supported by GIZ, would be transitioned into the National Vocational Training Institute and Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training, when it becomes fully operational.
The foundation has initiated moves to bring a settler campus of the University of Mines and Allied Sciences to Abirem.
Communications Manager of Newmont Goldcorp, Dr Osenko Gogo, said the company is driven by a purpose to create values and improve lives through sustainable and responsible mining.
She said there is a strategy to ensure that, everyone connected to their mining benefits.
The Newmont Akyem Development Foundation also donated reflector jackets, boots, whistles and touch lights among other protective equipment to revamp the neighborhood watch committee in the resettlement areas.
