The idea for a Friday night league match is not novel, and has been a tried and tested option to open matchdays the world over.
Legon Cities (formerly Wa All Stars) are currently taking on Asante Kotoko at the Accra Sports Stadium in a game that kicked off at 6pm. Our reporters there say that anyone now making their way to the grounds will have a tough time.
From the Liberation Circle to Castle Road is a gridlock, with many using the National Theatre route which also has heavier than usual traffic.
This development has come as a pleasant surprise because Legon Cities vs Kotoko is not a game that will ordinarily attract so much interest. But the hype around it created by a confluence of factors has made it a fun event for many.
A palpable social media buzz has tailed the match since the beginning of the week, and much of the credit should go to the communication team of the home side. They managed to get dancehall superstar Shatta Wale to promise a performance at the game.
The Legon side also caught the attention of the public with their kit launch, well-branded photos, videos and generally professional outlook.
