First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei-Owusu has highlighted discipline as the surest way to curbing the unending road carnages in the country.
Endorsing the #ArriveAlive campaign launched by JoyNews, the parliamentarian encouraged asked for the advocacy to be intensified while piling pressure on transport stakeholders such as drivers to get their vehicles tested.
“I congratulate you for starting that project; I will support you with every information I have,” he said.
The Bekwai MP also outlined some measures to curb the menace such as heightened patrols along major routes, road cameras among other approaches granted government had the resources.
JoyNews’ #ArriveAlive campaign is a road safety campaign that aims to find solutions on how to make roads in Ghana safe for all users with a continued discourse on why there are frequent road accidents occurring across the country.
The campaign comes as conversations on road safety have been reignited since a major carnage that occurred on January 14, 2020, at Dompoase junction on the Cape Coast-Takoradi Highway which claimed the lives of 34 people, shocking the nation.
Road safety experts say at least 2000 people are killed each year in Ghana with 2020 already having recorded dozens.
As part of JoyNews' #ArriveAlive campaign, the former DVLA boss said this is of the view that discipline could be in terms of acquisition of drivers’ licenses, maintenance of vehicles and discipline on the road.
He said: “Safety of you the driver and the passengers should be paramount. Every driver knows that you cannot overtake at a place that you cannot see carefully to 50m or more. But they do it all the time.
