The New Patriotic Patriotic (NPP) has debunked reports indicating President Akufo-Addo ignored the final funeral rites of the late Tommy Amemateku, who served as a Presidential Advisor under the Kufuor administration.
The party believes the publication is only targeted at causing disaffection for the President and downplay a successful funeral organised for the late patriot.
A press release signed by the Volta Regional NPP Chairman, Makafui Woanyah, stated that the party was well represented at the funeral by both former and current government appointees and executives.
“It is palpable falsehood or perhaps a figment of somebody's imagination to state that the President and Senior Party Members failed to attend and accord him [late Tommy Amemateku] the expected burial that the NPP is known for”, he stated.
Mr Woanyah emphasised that President Akufo-Addo joined thousands for the 3-day final funeral rites before leaving for his 12-day working visit to Scotland, Norway, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Belgium.
”It must be recalled that the President, Nana Addo-Dankwah Akuffo Addo after delivery of the State of the Nation Address on Thursday, 20th of February, 2020, came to Ho in the evening to join thousands of mourners to observe a vigil in memory of the late Tommy Amematekpor. It was a Night of Tributes and Hymns during which the President even made a cash donation to the bereaved family, and was the first to file past the body before it was opened to the public,” Mr Woanyah said.
He explained that the President was, however, represented by the Chief-of-Staff, Akosua Frema Osei-Opare, the Trade Minister, Alan K. Kyremanteng and other top government officials on Friday, for the Pre-Burial Mass, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Ho-Bankoe.
Mr Woanyah further stated that Former President, John Agyekum Kuffour, former Chief-of-Staff, Kojo Mpianim, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, and other former and current government appointees attended the Mass Burial Service on Saturday 22nd of February, 2020, ”which brought Agbozume, the hometown of the deceased, to a standstill”.
“The National Executive of the NPP was also represented by the General Secretary, John Boadu and a number of National Executives including the National Organizer, Sammy Awuku”, he added.
Mr Wonyah also classified that the party and the President did not neglect the late Tommy when he was sick as suggested by some reportage.
“The Party finds it unnecessary to mention the support which the President extended to the deceased when he heard of his sickness and his personal concern and efforts to seek advance medical treatment outside”, he stated.
He, therefore, entreated the public to disregard the ”malicious publication and vicious attempt to cause disaffection for the President and downplay the huge success of the grand funeral of the late Tommy Amematekpor”.
