A news item sited on Ghanaweb says a Ghanaian, Francis Oduro, has been shot and killed Wednesday May 21, 2008 near Truman College in the Uptown neighborhood in Chicago.
The report quoting reliable sources say Oduro migrated from Ghana to the USA about a year ago.
According to the report Police reports indicate that Oduro may have been an "innocent bystander,'' after an attack that critically wounded another man. The incident was the second of two reported shootings in the neighborhood Wednesday.
The report said two unidentified males in dark clothing approached two other men walking by and shot them at Broadway and Wilson avenue, according to Town Hall police Capt. William Wallace. Truman College is at 1145 W. Wilson Ave.
"Gunfire erupts and the two victims fell to the ground," Wallace said. "One was dead on arrival (DOA) on the scene and the other is in critical but stable condition at Illinois Masonic Hospital."
But Francis Oduro, 22, of 9838 S. Marquette Ave., was killed according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. He was pronounced dead at the Stein Institute at 1:30 a.m., according to the medical examiner's records.
The man who was critically injured is allegedly a gang member, according to the report.
It is "possible" that Oduro may have been an "innocent bystander,'' "We don't know for sure,'' the reports quotes the police officer.
The report states that police are investigating that possibility because of the clothing and shoes Oduro was wearing – especially his leather sandals, according to the captain.
Police are said to be seeking a white Subaru Forester -- a small sport-utility vehicle -- the two suspects allegedly fled in, Wallace said.
He said a motive has not been determined yet and no one is in custody Thursday morning for the shooting.
Belmont Area detectives are investigating the shootings.
