AS part of the Ghana @ 50 anniversary celebrations a series of fashion fairs have been lined up in the Volta Region to teach and expose the youth to Ghanaian designs and beauty care. The first in the series, which is expected to commence on April 2 to April 8, is being jointly organised by Riviera World Consult, a Keta based events organisers, fashion department of Ho Polytechnic and institutions in fashion and beauty care industries in the region. The fair, the first of its kind in the region will also provide stakeholders in the two industries the opportunity to interact, share ideas and establish links with their counterparts outside the region and the country to boost the industries and accelerate the growth and development of the region. It is the expectation of the organisers that the fairs would encourage the youth to patronise local fashionable goods and services, develop interest in the Ghanaian culture and discard foreign fashion and culture that impact negatively on society. Launching it, Mrs. Selorm Gbetordoame, Head of Fashion Department, Ho Polytechnic, observed that fashion was related to culture and like design had many depths of meaning. "Fashion in its broadest sense refers to a style of clothing that is popular and therefore should be worn at a given time but expected to change since it is dynamic," she said. Mrs Gbetordoame urged fashion designers to ensure that their designs were new, different and appealing on the local and international markets to give a boost to the economic development of the region and the country at large. She pointed out that modernisation had brought about frequent changes in clothing styles to meet the rapid demands of customers and non-verbal communication providing a way for societies to express their identities and values. Mrs. Gbetordoame explained that the youth had rejected adult values by rejecting decent identities and values for western clothing and styles which exposes vital parts of their bodies. Spectator
