The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in collaboration with the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) have stepped up efforts at improving the quantity and quality of agricultural statistics in Ghana and other developing countries.
Although the project is expected to be completed by end of June this year, a three-day workshop is currently ongoing at the M Plaza Hotel in Accra to, among other things receive, discuss and endorse recommendations of a previous research in seven countries.
The workshop begun Tuesday May 6, 2014.
The seven countries where the previous in-depth assessment of existing situation was conducted are Ghana, Mali, Burkina Faso, Nigeira, Tanzania, Uganda, Ethiopia and Ghana.
However, two South Asian countries, Bangladesh and India, were also selected for the assessment of their national agric statistic system.
Dr. Lamourdia Thiombiano, Ghana Regional Representative of the FAO said he is hopeful "the results of [the] workshop via the implementation of the Global Strategy in Africa will give the necessary impetus for other African countries, enabling them to produce quality statistical assessment reports and national action plans".
The Global Strategy for Improving Agricultural and rural Statistics was prepared and endorsed in February 2010 by the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC) in response to the declining quantity and quality of agricultural statistics in developing countries.
The purpose is to provide a framework for national and international statistical systems that enable them to produce and apply the basic data and information needed to guide decision-making in the 21st century.
Mr Thiombiano also revealed that findings gathered from Ghana so far indicate that agriculture statistics gathering in the country is one of the most advanced among the seven African countries selected for the project.
