Ghana’s international music sensation, Rocky Dawuni returns to the United States this summer for string of high profile live concerts.
Rocky is one of Africa’s most popular musicians whose live performances have often been called “legendary” and he is scheduled to appear at The Independent in San Francisco on July 26th for the Afro Funke Festival, renowned Reggae On the Rocks in Colorado on August 16th, the Twilight Dance Series at Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles on August 7th, Malibu Inn in Malibu on August 24th. Full itinerary below, please don’t miss the opportunity to catch this amazing live performer!!
Rocky Dawuni’s current CD Book of Changes, blazes new paths as a progressive fusion of Reggae, Afro Beat, traditional African sounds, and Hip Hop neo-griotism which has been dubbed “infectious” and “a classic” by tastemakers. In addition, his tunes “Wake the Town” and “The One” are featured on video giant EA’s FIFA 2008 and Simm’s video games which have been released world-wide on millions of consoles. Dawuni was also recently signed to a co-publishing and administration deal with Lionsgate Music.
2008 has been an international whirlwind for the Ghanaian star, with Rocky bringing Helsinki, Finland to a stand still with his headlining concert at the Tavastia. The UNICEF benefit also featured a who’s who of Finnish stars that came out to support the cause and joined Rocky on stage for riotous encore. The visit received wide media coverage and brought crucial attention to his work with UNICEF on children’s causes around the world. He also appeared in concert with Israeli Star Mosh Ben Ari at the Wilshire Theatre in June in Los Angeles having toured with him in Israel last year to rave reviews and, earlier this year, hit the city of Tamale in Ghana’s Northern Region - rolling into town for Rocky Dawuni’s Independence Splash 2008.
The event was held at the new 20,000-capacity Tamale Sports Stadium and Dawuni and his 10-piece band’s dazzling performance ensured the roots reggae musician a triumphant return to his ancestral home land of Northern Ghana. The 8th annual event (and the first ever live concert at his venue) was organized by Dawuni’s Africa Live! NGO and assisted by the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, with support from UNICEF and the European Union.
Dawuni has made several extensive trips throughout the Northern Region in conjunction with UNICEF & the Carter Center, helping shed light on the acute water and sanitation problems and hoping to spur practical and sustainable solutions reflective of his ongoing quest to use music as a tool for social development. Rocky has also served as a spokesperson and personality for Product (RED) led by U2’s front man Bono and Bobby Shriver supporting The Global Fund’s initiatives on HIV/ AIDs in Africa.
