About 75 million dollars out of the 245 million dollars under the Millennium Challenge Account (MCA) would be invested in the provision of social amenities such as water, electricity, sanitation and education in 23 beneficiary Metropolitan, Municipal and Districts the next three-and-a-half years.
Ms Katerina Ntep, Acting Residence Country Director of Millennium Challenge Account Programme announced this at a sod-cutting for work to begin on the rehabilitation of schools in Gomoa East and West Districts in the Central Region.
They are District Assembly schools at Nyanyano, Ojobi and Nsuaem in Gomoa East, Oguan and Bewuadze in Gomoa West.
A 25-member District Advisory Committee to supervise the projects was inaugurated.
She explained that the community projects were to enhance the living standards of farmers to reduce poverty through agricultural transformation.
Ms Ntep said management of Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) in collaboration with United States Agency for International Development (USAID) train teachers to work in schools rehabilitated under the projects to enhance quality education.
Mr. Martin Eson-Benjamin, Chief Executive Officer of MiDA, urged members of the advisory committee to work hard to complete the projects on schedule.
He explained that MCA was to promote the welfare of farmers by transforming their agricultural activities and appealed to farmers and farmer-based organizations to cooperate with MiDA to succeed.
Mrs. Augustine King, Deputy Gomoa West District Director of Education said the directorate had instituted measures to strengthen monitoring and supervision of teaching and learning.
She announced that a World University Research team from Canada in collaboration with University of Cape Coast, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and University of Ghana is undertaking a research into some problems that affected education in the district.
Ms Joyce Aidoo, Gomoa West District Chief Executive noted that lack of ready market for farm produce was the main cause of poverty among farmers and appealed to management of MiDA to liaise with Ghana Export Promotion Council to secure markets for farmers who had been exploited by traders in the past.
Nana Obeng Wiabo V, Chief of Nyanyano said the community was developing very fast due to its proximity to Kasoa, a leading market centre and appealed for more educational facilities to correspond to the rapid expansion.
Mr. Mac Jewel Annan, Gomoa East District Chief Executive, expressed appreciation to Government for selecting the district as a beneficiary of MCA.
