Since its inauguration by President Kufuor two years ago, the Ghana Telecom University College has tremendously discharged quality education in Telecommunications Engineering and Information Technology. This is evidenced in the outdooring of a number of vital assets that showed an improved approach in the dispensation of its duties, at a ceremony in Accra over the weekend. The projects included two Video-Conferencing Centres, Language Centre, Newsletter, and a bus. The rest were a Reprographic Centre and new reference books for the library. A sod- cutting ceremony was also held for a GETFund technology and classroom complex. Speaking at the joint launching, University Principal, Osei K. Darkwa, explained that one of the two video-conferencing centres was funded by the Chinese government through the Ministry of Communications, and the Huawei Technologies - a Chinese IT company in Ghana. The other was funded by Ghana Telecom. He maintained that the video-conferencing centres would be used to link up with affiliates from other parts of the world and be used to recruit virtual lecturers to teach at the University without physically being present in the country. He added that the new language centre was in response to demands to offer courses in foreign languages, adding that it would seek to offer high quality language skills for diverse learners, such as students, staff and working professionals. The glamorous occasion also premised the launch of the "GTUC- News Link”, a quarterly publication intended to inform and educate stakeholders about the University. “Specifically it is intended to keep readers abreast of happenings at the University, communicate new policies and regulations and inform the University community about upcoming events,” Dr. Osei Darkwa added. A new Reprographic Center which was also launched has digital copiers, provided by Ghana Telecom and the GETFund. The Centre, which will provide cost-effective printing and digital copying services to the University and the public, has state-of-the-art digital copiers and printers that will offer high speed quality printing, reproduction and easy document preparation. Darkwa also showed gratitude to the National Council for Tertiary Education for donating reference books to help students and the public who visit the library to research on various topics. He ended by calling for a rapid expansion in the educational system, saying “our educational needs as a country cannot be met by attempting to build more brick-and-mortar buildings to house conventional schools and colleges”. He therefore, suggested the need for improving e-learning system and its various variants such as hybrid learning, mobile learning, distance learning and ubiquitous learning. Source: Statesman
