Government is to grant the Conference of Rectors of Polytechnics (CORP) a bargaining power come September 16, this month, Mr Dan Ayim Antwi, General Secretary of the Teachers and Educational Workers Union (TEWU) of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said.
He told the Ghana News Agency on Monday that, government gave TEWU the assurance last week, which would enable TEWU and CORP to review the Unified Conditions of Service for the unionised staff of Polytechnics in the country.
Mr Antwi said the delay in granting the mandate compelled TEWU to threaten an industrial action.
He said based on the assurance all branches of the union had been notified to suspend the action to wait for the deadline.
Mr Antwi said government’s assurance came out at a meeting last week, which was attended representatives from TEWU, the National Labour Commission (NLC), Ministries of Finance and Economic Planning, Education Science and Sports, Manpower, Youth and Employment, National Council on Tertiary Education and CORP.
Before the meeting, the NLC urged TEWU to suspend the industrial action until all stakeholders had met on the issue.
Mr Antwi said the Unified Conditions of Service for the Polytechnics expired in December 2007, and TEWU petitioned the Commission earlier that government had failed to grant the mandate to CORP.
