The Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), has appealed to the government to disburse the 2007/2008 academic year thesis and bursary grants to enable graduate students complete their studies.
A statement issued by the association and signed by its President, Michael Adusei, said the “2008/2009 academic year has begun but the thesis and bursary grants for 2007/2008 academic year are yet to be paid”, explaining that the undue delay in the disbursement of the grants has created a lot of financial difficulties for graduate students in their academic work.
“GRASAG would like to put on record that a lot of efforts have been made to facilitate the payment of the grants. Press releases, press conferences and radio interviews complemented with incessant visits to the offices of GETFUND, Scholarship Secretariat and Ministry of Education, Science and Sports have all been employed as weapons to move the government to pay the grants. Reference is made to the recent press conference held at University of Cape Coast on 29th July, 2008 which was covered by the Daily Graphic issue of 1st August, 2008.”
GRASAG is also asking the government to publish the modus operandi of the Scholarship Secretariat for the attention of all Ghanaians. The association said it was displeased with how the Scholarship Secretariat has been operating since its establishment.
“Over the years, the operations of the Scholarship Secretariat have not been transparent. GRASAG believes that this has rendered the Secretariat the preserve of the privileged few who are close to it.
“Meanwhile, the leadership of the association would like to appeal to all graduate students in Ghana to continue to exercise restraint as all lawful avenues are explored to facilitate the disbursement of the grants”, the statement said.
