Deputy Education Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has revealed that the government has ordered 10,000 pieces of protective gears into the country.

The gears, he said would be distributed to tertiary institutions in order to assist health providers in the fight against Ebola should there be an outbreak in the country.

Speaking on Adom FM's ‘Dwaso Nsem’, Mr. Ablakwa noted it was concluded at a meeting with the heads of tertiary institutions that the government would establish screening centres in all the institutions to help early detection of any Ebola case.

He continued health facilities within these institutions would also be provided with the appropriate protective gears to support them in the event of an outbreak.

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has been described as the worse ever in the history of the continent.

Four countries worst hit by the virus - Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea and Nigeria are battling to control the disease. Some health officials in those countries have lost their lives attempting to give medical care to patients.

Recent reports indicated that 2,240 people have been infected with the disease and about 1,299 recorded deaths between March and early August, 2014.

Tertiary institutions have suspended re-opening dates for two more weeks as the Education Ministry puts in place measures to prevent foreign students from entering the country with the disease.

Mr. Ablakwa noted there were 10,399 foreign students in the country with about 10,020 of them, coming from Nigeria, Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

Therefore, it was prudent that the re-opening dates be posponed to enbale the Ministry put in place the appropriate measures to protect the lives of the students.

He further assured the general public the Ministry would ensure that students in the second cycle and basic schools are covered in the preventive measures when school re-opens in September.
