National Media Commission Chairman, Kabral Blay-Amihere has challenged the media to seriously expose the obstacles hindering free movement of persons and goods in the sub-region.

Speaking at a Media Summit on “ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement of Persons, Goods & Rights to Residency” in Accra Thursday, Ambassador Blay-Amihere said without the media’s intervention to uncover these obstacles, the adaption of the protocols would be defeated.

Therefore, he urged journalists across the West African region to use their investigative skills to delve into those issues.

As part of the ECOWAS protocols, member states are expected to promote trade liberalization and the free movement of people without going through any frustration.

However, this has been defeated, as nationals from other countries face myriads of problems at the various borders and the most affected being traders, who have to pay their ways in and out.

Governments of these countries have been accused of turning a blind eye on the incessant intimidation and extortion these other nationals go through at the borders.

But Ambassador Blay-Amihere stated that the media’s efforts to dig out the issues would help ECOWAS actualize its dream of becoming a stronger body.

Editor-in-Chief of the SUN newspaper in Ghana, Shola Oshunkeye also indicated that journalists needed a lot of mentoring and orientation in order to effect change in the sub-region.

Insisting, lack of such motivations has brought about inaccuracies and bad publications in the media in general.
