Following an Accra High Court order to the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to refrain from dumping untreated liquid sewerage at the Korle Gonno beach popularly known as ‘Lavender Hill’, some waste collectors have refused to accept the court ruling.

They said it will be very difficult for them to stop the practice since it is their source of livelihood and the only means by which they are able to cater for their families.

Speaking on Citi FM, Monday, the collectors refuted claims the practice of dumping untreated liquid sewage at the Korle Gonno beach contributes to the spread of cholera.

An Accra High Court has ordered the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) to refrain from dumping untreated human sewerage at the Korle Gonno beach due to its negative health implications on the environment.

It further ordered the assembly to make copies of its decommissioning plan available to the EPA within 14 days.

This followed an application of mandamus filled by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) asking the court to stop the AMA and its Chief Executive Officer Alfred Oko Vanderpuije from polluting the Korle Gonno beach.

The dumping of human sewage at the beach has accounted for the high number of cholera cases recorded in that locality.

However the sewage collectors say they do not believe that their activities contribute to the spread of cholera but rather help in preventing the disease due to regular emptying of septic tanks.

They said those who defecate in plastic bags and dump them around are the ones responsible for the spread of the disease and should be dealt with.
