Mrs Irene Duncan-Adanusa, General Secretary of Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) on Friday said retired educationist had considerable wealth of experience that needed to be channelled into productive ventures for Ghana Education Service (GES) and the nation.
Addressing participants at the third anniversary of Ghana Association of Retired Educationists at Fijai near Takoradi, she said GNAT could utilize the experience of retired educationists by offering them representation on national committees, soliciting for advice from them and appointing them panel members during interviews for staff appointments.
The theme for the celebration was “The Contribution of Retired Educationist to National Development”.
Mrs Duncan-Adanusa stressed that as mentors and opinion leaders in their communities, retired educationists could be constituted into teams of resources persons to organize in-service or refresher courses for teachers and other personnel of the GES.
She urged them to upgrade themselves and acquire knowledge in Information and Communication Technology to be able to fit into whatever endeavour they might find themselves.
Mr Samuel Bannerman-Mensah, Director General of GES said it had been the major responsibility of the education sector to develop the country’s human resources for sustainable socio-economic growth and development.
He said the new education reforms programme was to emphasize and make education more meaningful to the needs of society.
Mr Bannerman-Mensah stressed the need to improve conditions in schools in deprived areas to attract competent staff and said that was a major priority being addressed by the government.
Mr Michael K. Nsowah, National Coordinator of School Feeding Programme said the institutional memory that retired educationists possessed was achieved with sacrifices from the State.
