Residents of Apedwa in the Eastern Region staged a demonstration Friday, against their chief who they say gave out their lands to foreign investors, but is not paying the right compensation.

The residents, numbering about a hundred, said they have lost their farm lands after Osaberima Obenakwa Kwarifah II gave out the lands.

The angry residents stormed the said lands to halt a process to clear the land for a poultry farm project to begin.

They have threatened to set fire to the earth-moving machines working on the land within 48 hours unless the developer leaves the land.

Joy News’ Correspondent, Kofi Siaw explains the protestors, who are mainly farmers are unhappy about compensation amount given to them.

According to them the paltry sum of 100 cedis each offered by the chief as compensation, is inadequate reward for losing their farms.

Speaking on the Joy FM Midday News however, Osaberima Obenakwa Kwarifah II said he was shocked by the demonstration because himself and government officials have been in talks with persons who lost their farms.

He said he was approached by government in 2013 to release lands for the poultry, which he agreed to.

The Apedwa chief said after a video of the project was shown to the residents, they agreed that the project be sited on a 200-acre land.

According to the chief, 73 people have since been compensated, although he did not state the compensation amount.

He however promised that talks will continue with the farmers who have lost their lands.
