The National Peace Council may have to relocate its office in Accra because, owners of the building housing office, Ghana National Petroleum Council (GNPC), have served the council with two eviction notices.
“They [GNPC] keep reminding us that we don’t belong here”, Chairman of the Council, Most Reverend Emmanuel Asante said.
He was speaking at short ceremony in Accra Tuesday when Interior Minister, Mark Woyongo paid a working visit to the Council’s office.
He told the Minister the Council is struggling to undertake its mandate due to lack of funds.
The National Peace Council set up by an act of Parliament is mandated to foster peace in Ghana by managing and resolving conflicts in the country.
The Council, whose members represent various religious, social or political groups provides advise to the government on causes of specific conflicts such as socio-economic disparities to promote policies addressing these issues.
Most Reverend Emmanuel Asante also said although the council has the capacity to deliver on its mandate, inadequate funding for transport and other logistics is crippling that effort.
Mark Woyongo said the challenges would be reduced considerably with the establishment of the National Peace Fund, which he said must be “launched without delay” to solve the financial challenges facing it.
He said businesses must also assist the Peace Council to enable it discharge its duties.
“It is the objective of the government to provide a high-level accompaniment in terms of resources for the work of the National Peace Council, especially in some areas where the process has stalled due to resources”, the Minister assured.
