Hip-life music icon A-Plus says but for the support of some musicians in the country, the flag-bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana AKufo-Addo, would have done worse in the presidential elections.
The young musician who is known in private life as Kwame Asare Obeng is one several young musicians who rallied round the campaign of Nana Addo, to garner support for the ruling party.
The 31-year-old who claims to have once supported the National Democratic Congress (NDC) because of its founder Flt Lit. Jerry John Rawlings said his main attraction for joining any party is the personality of its leader.
The musician played down suggestions that his stint in politics could jeopardise his musical career.
Nana Akufo-Addo’s campaign technique took a unique trend, a type political analysts described as unprecedented in the annals of Ghanaians politics.
A meeting with members of the Musicians Association of Ghana (MUSIGA) culminated in a full blown musical fiesta on NPP campaign platforms.
For the latter part of Nana Addo’s campaign, artists spanning the musical genre joined the campaign team of the presidential candidate across the country.
Ace musicians Daddy Lumba composed a special campaign song for the party which supporters at rally grounds were always treated to. Other musicians such as Philipa Baafi, Praye and Ntentan were not missing in action.
But according to A-Plus, the spark for all that was marketing, “trying to make everybody understand that everybody in Ghana is NPP.”
Although his party – or better still his candidate – could not garner enough votes to assume power, A-Plus maintained he made the right choice.
