The poverty-stricken farming community of Dubila near Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region of Ghana can heave a sigh of relief because Airtel Ghana has decided to complete and furnish a three classroom block, which has been wasting away for the past four years.

The mud-made uncompleted classroom block was started by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly to enable pupils who complete primary three to continue to upper primary, but the Assembly could not complete the building due to lack of funds.

The dilapidated classroom block has chopped branches of trees as roof but and that exposes pupil to the vagaries of the harsh weather. Meanwhile, some pupils either school under trees in Dubila or walk for more than four miles to schools in other towns to continue their primary education.

But in fifth episode of Airtel Ghana’s Corporate Social Responsibility Programme on TV, Airtel Touching Lives Season Three, the telco has promised to make teaching and learning a lot better for children in the Dubila community.

Airtel has promised to complete the three classroom block and also provide teaching and learning materials to the school.

During the assessment of the challenges facing the community, it also emerged that most pupils do not have school uniforms, while others wear very tattered school uniforms, so Airtel also promised to provide uniforms for the pupils.

The school also has no trained teachers because conditions there are a disincentive to trained teachers posted there.

But Airtel is hopeful that the support to the school and the community will motivate trained teachers posted to the school to stay.

Head of Communications and CSR at Airtel, Donald Gwira said Airtel believes that access to high quality education is key to sustainable social and economic development of any country.

He said Airtel Ghana believes that with the support, children in Dubila would have a more conducive environment to study and to have a fair chance in life against all their other competitors across the country.

Assemblyman for the area, Hon. Moses Abilba is optimist that the gesture would go a long way to improve teaching and learning in the community.

“I am very delighted for the support because it will help improve teaching and learning in the community and would inspire a lot of children to go to school”, he said

Meanwhile, during the same episode of Airtel Touching Lives show, Silvia, a hearing and visually impaired student who of Mampong Special School for the Deaf benefited from the programme in the previous season says she is grateful to the Airtel Touching Lives Team for the special equipment given her to easily access information online and to interact with her friends on social media.

Sylvia said she is having an excitingly new learning experience on her special computer provided by Airtel Touching Lives in the previous season.

According to Sylvia’s teacher, teaching has been made easier for them, and for Sylvia especially, as she now has unlimited access to information on the internet with her equipment.
